Here Are 5 Practical Tips To Improve Your Typing Speed & Accuracy

#1 Use the correct starting position

When practicing your typing skills, it’s important to use proper hand placement. To start, keep your fingers positioned over these key letters (left hand over the A, S, D, and F, and the right hand over the J, K, and L). Almost all keyboards have a small protrusion on the F and J keys to make it easier to recognize those keys. This is important for two reasons; the first is to always return your fingers to this correct position, and the second reason is to have your eyes on the screen.

#2 Don't look at your fingers

Instead of looking down at your hands, focus on your screen. This can be difficult at first, especially if you have not yet mastered the exact placement of the keys. However, looking at the screen will help improve your accuracy because you will be able to catch your typos as they occur. You’ll also begin to memorize the placement of the keys and you’ll be able to type more quickly as you practice.

#3 Learn Keyboard shortcuts

One simple shortcut deals with typos. If you made a typo, and you need to use the backspace more than twice, there is a better way. Use Control (Ctrl) + backspace for Windows, and Option + backspace for MAC. This way you will delete the whole word! Click here for more keyboard shortcuts.

#4 Practice this phrase

There’s a short phrase in the English language that contains every letter of the alphabet: “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Try to type this phrase without looking at the keyboard.

#5 Use online tools and tests

The most important advice anyone can give you is to practice, practice, and practice. Below are several online tools which you can use to practice and test your typing speed and accuracy.

Ali Abdaal is a master in typing, and he said that "everyone can be twice as productive as before by just simply improving their typing speed". His typing speed is 156 words per minute, almost 4 times faster than the average person.
